Every
term,
each year group has a specific topic to explore in depth.
This
provides the opportunity for children, and teachers, to learn more
about an interesting topic and to apply lessons such as maths, art,
writing, and science
to this overarching topic.
These
topics include more traditional subjects,
such
as the Ancient
Greeks and WWI
and WWII, as well as
themes
that are of particular interest given external events.
For example,
we looked at space
when Tim Peake was on
the International Space Station and
the Olympics when we hosted the Games in London. We find that this
caters not only to a range of interests but also engages children
with news and current affairs.
Children get very involved in topics which often culminate in dressing up, making pieces of art to send home, and putting on performances for parents and relatives to come in and enjoy.
